Purnia City
About Purnia City
Purnia (also spelt Purnea) is one of the oldest and largest cities in northeastern Bihar, serving as the headquarters of both Purnia district and the Purnia Division. Located approximately 90 km from Simrahi, Purnia is a major commercial, educational and cultural hub of the Koshi-Seemanchal region, with a population of around 3.5 lakh. The city has a rich historical heritage and has been an important administrative centre since the Mughal era.
Purnia Junction (station code: PRNA) is one of the busiest railway stations in Bihar, offering direct rail connections to Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and other major cities across India. The city is well connected by road via NH 31 (now renumbered as part of NH 27) and NH 107, making it accessible from multiple directions. Regular bus services and shared transport operate between Purnia and surrounding districts including Supaul and Saharsa.
Purnia is known for its diverse cultural heritage, blending influences from the Mithila and Seemanchal traditions. Notable landmarks include the Kali Mandir — one of the most famous and revered temples in the region — Purnia University, and numerous government and administrative institutions. The city has a vibrant commercial scene with both traditional bazaars and modern shopping centres, catering to the needs of a large catchment area.
The city is also an important agricultural trading centre, especially for jute, maize and rice. The agricultural markets (mandis) in Purnia serve farmers from across the Koshi-Seemanchal belt. The city has seen significant urban development in recent years, with new educational institutions, healthcare facilities and commercial establishments.
From Simrahi, Purnia is accessible via Saharsa and the NH 107 / NH 31 route. The drive takes approximately two hours. Purnia also serves as a gateway to the Seemanchal region, including Kishanganj and the foothills of the eastern Himalayas. Guests at Pushkar Guest House can request travel assistance for arranging transport to Purnia.
